  • Sidi Amour

The intervention site is located in the region of Soukra in the northeast of Tunisia (36°55'43.55"N, 10° 9'57.28"E). Currently, there are 3200 ha within the irrigation scheme in Borj Touil. As there are no infrastructures to use surface water, farmers rely on TWW and on rainfed crops using drip irrigation with on-demand irrigation delivery schedule.

The intervention site is managed by a Project Management Unit (PMU), composed as following: ONAS, as contracting authority; CRDA (Commissariat Régional au Développement Agricole - Regional Commission for Agricultural Development), as partner, responsible for the promotion of local agriculture and irrigated scheme management of Borj Touil; and the GDA Sidi Amor, as beneficiary of certain components of the project. Farmers do not directly participate in the decision-making process but their voice is heard through the GDA.

The agricultural activity practiced is based mainly on field crops, in particular cereal crops (durum wheat, soft wheat and barley) and winter fodder (bersim, oats, ryegrass and green barley). Most of these activities are carried out under rainfed conditions. The practice of irrigated agriculture is based on summer fodder (sorghum and forage legumes). The industrial crops implemented in the area are limited to the cultivation of industrial corn. The main constraint of agricultural development in the irrigated scheme of Borj Touil remains the poor quality of the TWW. This constraint has led farmers to practice extensive dry farming. On the other hand, irrigation is provided according to the needs of the livestock and the rainfall conditions during the wet period and over small areas. At the level of the project area, the agricultural production system is extensive; the most dominant is based on cereal cultivation with a two-year rotation of cereal-fodder type, or even without rotation, either cereal or fodder.

👉The aim of the project is to ensure the sustainability of the existing pilot site, guarantee and reinforce the purifying performance of the existing complementary treatment system and to emphasize the role of the GDA Sidi Amor (Groupement de Développement Agricole -Agricultural Development Group) in training and raising awareness amongst farmers and scientific researchers.

  • MENAWARA post treatments in the Waste Water Treatment Plant

Aiming to improve the water quality improvement processes at the WWPT intervention site Borj Touil, Tunisia, according to the "fit for purpose" principle, a sedimentation tank has been built before the existing Constructed Wetlands aiming to avoid that the amounts of sludge that can flow from the existing storage basin upstream of the Constructed Wetlands could produce clogging in the filter beds. The post-treatment unit feed, by gravity, the existing Constructed Wetlands.

Through a pumping system, the TWW supplies the 4 ha included in the GDA of Sidi Amour and, by gravity, the farmers’ fields in Borj Touil (6 ha).

  • Improvement of water use efficiency in agriculture

The project provides TWW for the development of irrigated plots over an area of 10 Ha, including 6 Ha in the CRDA area (3 farmers) and 4 Ha in the GDA Sidi Amor level.

A collective pressurized irrigation system has been designed to convey and distribute water to the proposed irrigated plots. Olive trees and fodder crops have been planted.
