Refers to processes that purify water for uses such as irrigation or for water blended with other environmental systems such as a river, reservoir, or groundwater basin prior to reuse. It can also include treatment processes to remove nitrogen and phosphorus in order to allow discharge into a highly sensitive or fragile ecosystem (estuaries, low-flow rivers, coral reefs, etc.)

Also known as fecal coliform. A subset of the coliform group of bacteria found in the intestinal tract of humans and other warm-blooded animals. They can produce acid and gas from lactose at 44.0-44.5ºC; hence the test for them is more specific than for total coliforms and selects a narrower range of organisms. Escherichia coli (E. coli) is typically the mayor proportion of thermo-tolerant coliforms. (Asano et al., 2007).
