Also known as fecal coliform. A subset of the coliform group of bacteria found in the intestinal tract of humans and other warm-blooded animals. They can produce acid and gas from lactose at 44.0-44.5ºC; hence the test for them is more specific than for total coliforms and selects a narrower range of organisms. Escherichia coli (E. coli) is typically the mayor proportion of thermo-tolerant coliforms. (Asano et al., 2007).
